Review of City of Men (2007) by Jack B — 01 Mar 2008
A decent enough movie, but those going to see it because of its connection with City of God will be disappointed. This movie is not the sequel to that one, but a continuation of a Brazilian TV series, also called City of Men.
It has a lot more in common with the 'after-school special' approach of the TV series than the energy and life of the movie. Unfortunately, this movie also lacks what makes the TV series interesting; the show was about the every-day life of two kids growing up in the favela, while the movie is almost entirely concerned with its contrived plot.
Fans of the show will also not appreciate the fact that Miramax saw fit to change the names of major characters (Acerola becomes Ace, Laranjinha becomes Wallace, Madrugadao becomes Midnight), sometimes even seeing fit to dub in new names to match their subtitles.
