Review of City of Men (2007) by Dana A — 16 Oct 2009
In the small series of big cinema being distributed from Brazil, 'Cidade dos Homens' continues the streak of well made films set in a parts of Brazil that aren't advertised to the world. Although not the masterpiece 'Cidade de Deus' was, the gritty atmosphere of the favelas, captivating plot, and interesting characters still made this film something to behold.
The film does a terrific job attempting to tackle some of the big subjects which affect Brazilians in todays world, not only in gang life, but in parenting and work troubles as well. No that the film is without exaggeration, there are many real aspects to the film that can be frightening to think about that most people don't realize, like yes, there are that many guns in the streets of Brazil.
The more I reflect on the 'Cidade dos Homens' that more I like and the more I appreciate it. I would put it right on par with 'Troupa de Elite'...
