Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by Darryl C — 31 Aug 2010
A completely astounding and horrific experience. It is so relentless in it's depiction of one of the most revolting tragedies in the history of Chineese/ Japeneese conflict, that it's almost a physically painful experience.
Add to that the superb direction - wonderful cinematograpy and excellent cast and script; and you get this... an utterly beautiful and harrowing film that achieves the kind of emotional investment that previous genre failures (Saving Private Ryan and Shindlers List) never managed to come close to.
This is quite simply, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest war movies ever made - and certainly one of the most brutal and harrowing experiences you likely to have any time soon.
You MUST watch this film!
