Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by William S — 20 Oct 2010
This movie came on after SBS news and was not prepared to watch it but ended up glued and captivated by it to the very last moment. This movie recounts the horrors of the Nanjing invasion in 1937 through several figures both historical and fictional from the Chinese and Japanese side.
What was amazing about this film was the breath-taking cinematography that uses black and white filming to depict the brutal events that happened in devastated Nanjing which made it feel very real, as if you actually there as well.
The story and the depiction of the war were both horrifying and captivating. Anyone that never experienced or felt the impact of war will do so here with full force. Easily one of the most powerful and realistic war films I've ever seen.
