Review of City of God (2002) by Shahzad M — 10 Aug 2015
People are always claiming that their film has a "the most realistic depiction" of the slums of whatever place that you'll ever see. Only City of God has the right to make that claim. This movie shook me to my very core with every scene and the heartbreaking realization that many of the victims of this type of warfare are people who were simply in the wrong place at the right time.
Unlike other movies of this genre, City of God never adds a layer of paint to make it prettier or more appealing to wider audiences. It's honest to itself and the viewer to a fault.
