Review of City of God (2002) by Simon H — 28 Jun 2014
Set within the violent slums of Rio de Janeiro, City of God is my second non-English speaking film that has really impressed me. Based on a true story, the film really opens your eyes up to what some of those less fortunate individuals in Brazil have to live with. The script is well written with good character development. Many of the young actors were found from within the actual City of God but their skills really make you believe they has already been performing for years.
You can also spot many influences from Quentin Tarantino when watching City of God. There are many camera angles and editing techniques which would not seem out of place in a Tarantino movie. There are also a number of sub headings on show as the story is split into different characters with a number of flackbacks to earlier scenes.
As long as you were willing to give reading subtitles a try, then City of God is definitely a film worth watching. It is well made and gives you a view of Brazil that you don't normally see.
