Review of City Lights (1931) by Tomek S — 03 Mar 2011
Alright, so forget all the schtick, the gimmicks and the jokes, I legitimately love film and the dream would be to write about them for money, albeit by dedicating more than five minutes to goofing off a review on facebook to amuse 'someone'; anyone. and that desire stems from the feeling you get when you watch a magical film. whether it be an ACTUAL magical film (lord of the rings) or a film that just exudes pathos and metaphorical magic.
City lights is one of those films.
It's so easy to write a review about something shit. the vitirol just spills out, yet it's the most daunting of tasks to actually write something real and heartfelt about a piece of art you legitimately connect with.
I'm not going to bother, that's a job for a potential fine day where I do earn money for writing about movies, but suffice to say; city lights is a tangible embodiment of all the reasons I lost my heart to film to begin with and is the only film that I can hand on my heart say is one of the greatest films of all time.
As george bernard shaw said about chaplin, '(he's) the only genius to come out of the movie industry'.
Smile.
