Review of City Island (2009) by Dustin G — 12 Feb 2011
City Island is great if you look at it the right way. It's a movie about a very dysfunctional family who are for the most part terrible to each other. There is unfaithfulness, lies, secrets. They don't seem to get along well or even enjoy each others company all that much. So as a family unit, these people are not to be looked highly upon. I would hope this level of dysfunction isn't common in the typical modern family, though I fear that it might be.
Amidst all the negativity though, there is some humor and the movie is entertaining enough. It works best as a cautionary tale though. Take what unravels this family to heart because even though the end of the movie attempts to paint a picture of the family living happily ever after, nothing's actually been resolved and the family is just as dysfunctional as it ever was.
