Review of City Island (2009) by Steven M — 25 Jun 2011
City Island is a movie about a dysfunctional family trying to do their own thing without the others knowing just what is going down. It's about lying and the troubles with getting caught up in the webs you weave. It's about telling the truth because in the end it's easier.
The father is a character who loves his family but has two secrets he doesn't let them in on. He still smokes and he wants to be an actor. SPOILER! He takes acting classes at night and tells his wife he's going to play Poker with friends. After so long his wife believes he's cheating on her which leads her to want to get payback. This leads to a lot of drama and very powerful scenes. The daughter lies about going to college while she strips to pay for school. The father also brings home a convict who is actually his son. From here, you can tell how chaotic things will be.
The movie is sweet, funny, and feels very authentic. I can honestly say I was moved. I did not expect to tear up on this movie. Surprising. I truly loved it. It mimics my family in a few ways and really keeps me on track to always trying to tell the truth. A Must See for everyone!
