Review of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009) by Francesca J — 30 Mar 2011
This film surprised me with how enjoyable it was. Having read all twelve books in the Darren Shan saga when they were first published, I was weary of the style of this film since it does differ greatly from how I interpreted the story all those years ago.
However, the darkly comic atmosphere really works, and the visuals are aesthetically pleasing in relation to how the film has been adapted for the big screen. Yeah, there are some parts that were slightly frustrating - eg: monkey girl - but I'll overlook that since the rest really impressed me.
It's actually a real shame that they won't make the sequels; I guess it's not sappy enough of a story for the Twilight generation. And maybe that's a good thing - don't need tasteless teens ruining something else I like.
