Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Afro P — 04 Feb 2011
The director's cut of Cinema Paradiso is a marathon, but is done wonderfully. Provides us with a little more information on why "Toto" and the mysterious girl who captured his heart never got together.
The result is a more sanguine movie, but not necessarily a better one. This is a charming film that laces sadness of World War II torn Italy with an overridingly delightful celebration of southern Italian humor.
The characters are what makes this movie transcendent, including the young Toto, his mother, the priest, and of course, the projectionist, played by the amazing rubber-faced actor, Philippe Noiret. It is an uplifting movie, and with the exception of some brief "film within the film" clips of nudity and adult situations, it is a film worthy of wide appeal.
