Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Jon P — 21 May 2015
Giuseppe Tornatore's classic drama is two films in one; and two great ones at that.
The first is a love letter to cinema itself, exploring one child's fascination with film, charting changes in the medium, and calling out to that forgotten first-time cinemagoer inside us all. The second is a self-aware romance, wearing its heart, homages and cliches on its sleeve.
As a complete and charming whole, Cinema Paradiso offers a stern reminder of the aspects of real life and real love which are, and aren't, cinematic. Movie magic at its finest and most universally relatable, the film speaks to anybody and everybody who's ever fallen in love, been to the cinema or fallen in love with the cinema itself.
