Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Hoiying W — 20 Jan 2008
I felt the film started rather poorly with its irritating and ugly slow-motion/fast-motion shots, as well as the turgid and lame poetic associations between capitalist modernity and human relations (say expiration dates on cans and the length of human relationships).
The first protagonist was a loser and wasn't interesting to watch, in short. A chance meeting with a femme fatale, and the first section, goes nowhere. However, the second story, featuring Tony Leung as a lovelorn cop and a girl with an obsession with California, is endearingly quirky.
Rather than crushing the audience, Wong Kar-Wai demonstrates that he does in fact have a lighter side. And it confirms just how good Tony Leung is as an actor - few are as charismatic.
