Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Donald Z — 11 Dec 2008
Chungking Express is a movie that is very alive with energy and directed in a way that gives it an electricity despite the simple stories contained within it.
It's hard to give it a single genre description. Part of its originality is that it is kind of a genre unto itself, borrowing from bunch of different ones.
The performances have an honest innocence to them that you feel is just what the movie calls for. I love movies set in Hong Kong because that city has such a uniqueness to it that adds so much to a movie set in its city streets.
A lot of people feel this is one of the top movies of the 90's. I may not go that far, but I enjoyed it very much and haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw it, so it's very likely I'll enjoy it even more the second time around.
