Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Nix V — 21 May 2010
Rating - 8/10.
"Chungking Express' takes old wine and turns into a trippy new cocktail, made with a lot of heart, with enduring passion and a minute eye for detail. Interweaving two aching love stories set in urban Hong-Kong, director Wong Kar Wai tells simple tales with beautiful poignancy, his frames oozing colour and rushing sound, and then suddenly stooping low to a heartbreaking silence. His Hong-Kong is lonely, love-lorn, in search of a more fulfilling world, in search of selves more perfect than themselves. Being a paen of all that is unrequited, suffice to say that in Wai's vision of the world he lives in, that dream of fulfilling love remains a dream.
