Review of Christmas in Connecticut (1945) by Ralph R — 28 Mar 2008
It's not only a classic Christmas film, it's a classic, period. It's classic comedy, classic Stanwyck, classic film making.
It's nice to have a Christmas movie to watch that has a sophisticated story that doesn't involve all the sachariny sweet Santa BS. Some people in the world do have grown up Christmases and this intelligent and humourous comedy will fit right in!
It is interesting to note the detail paid to supporting characters. For example, in this 1945 film there are two black characters that, instead of being a stereotype of the time, are educated working people (one an elegant shopgirl and the other a well spoken restauratne employee). During a time when black actors were playing Mammy and Uncle Tom, here are two shining examples of bucking the system in Hollywood.
Stanwyck is at her best and Morgan his most beautiful!
