Review of Chocolat (2000) by Victor V — 23 Aug 2009
I have mixed feelings about this movie. I liked the idea of an outsider coming into a small town and shaking things up. I found myself connecting more with the outsiders than the upright folks because they have more life in them--they weren't stuffy, boring and judgmental; they had a love for each other that was curiously absent in some of the tranquil townspeoples' attitudes towards the "immoral" river rats and marketers of chocolate (and during Lent! How rude!).
The moral tale was a bit too obvious, though, as evidenced in the final sermon (literally a sermon) about tolerance and blah blah blah.
Overall a decent tale of temptation, judgmentalism, friendship, and love.
