Deeply downbeat in its spirit and yet undeniably truthful, Chinatown is a neo-noir classic that suggests good rarely wins in the real world. Polanski's film is a masterpiece of the cinematic medium, gripping, grasping and complex, with a story that twists more than a meandering river.
Nicholson excels in the lead and Dunaway gives an exceptional performance. Chinatown is a film that is perfectly constructed and is a look at the seedy underbelly of big cities and a look at the (still, sadly, ever lingering) notions of lies, greed and underhandedness of big money business deals and how they ignore society.
A masterpiece from gentle beginnings-to mysterious core- perfectly cynical end.
