Review of Chinatown (1974) by Bradens584 — 19 Dec 2020
It’s always key to separate the art from the artist. Because Chinatown is the exact opposite of its director, Roman Polanski, and that should be taken as a great complement to this film (for one, Chinatown didn’t flee overseas after pleading guilty to a major felony).
But Polanski aside, this is a great film. It follows a private investigator played by Jack Nicholson, who, after being hired on a simple case involving a cheating husband, is entangled in a vast web of fraud, deception, government conspiracy, dark secrets and murder.
I don’t think Chinatown is the masterpiece critics say it is, a few plot lines could have been fleshed out more. But it still has great cinematography, brilliant dialogue, terrific performances and an enthralling mystery.
