Review of Chinatown (1974) by Liam C — 22 May 2014

Chinatown is an excellently assembled dark crime thriller with an excellent Jack Nicholson in the lead role. Although the film is most famous for it's ending quote and the story that leads up to it.

I'm sure it's hard to fully realize how much of a game changer it was back in the day in modern times but the story still holds up even to this day and it's still great and deservedly won an Oscar, it's very well written, layered, tense and deep.

Very early on the audience knows that this isn't going to be just like any old film we've seen before and it just keeps building up and up to the ending that was very risk taking and I'm glad Polanski changed the end, or rather, actually wrote and ending.

The original that was going to happen was very cliched albeit what the audience probably wanted to see but the ending that has gone on into movie legend is all the more greater and the final quote has been left up to interpretation and interpreted in many ways.

Immensely enjoyable, darkly humorous in some parts and unforgettable, Chinatown is definitely a classic and earns it's reputation and I'm glad I finally got a chance to watch it.
