Review of Chinatown (1974) by Jonathan B — 07 Jul 2015
There's a reason why Chinatown is both the shining pinnacle of modern noir and the measuring stick everything set in Los Angeles is measured against, and that's because it's one of the greatest films of all time.
Robert Towne's screenplay is amazing. Roman Polanski's direction is amazing. Jack Nicholson's performance is amazing. It's put together and functions so effortlessly, bouncing back and forth between mystery and intrigue, seduction and wiles.
Just like detective Jake Gittes and L.A. itself during that period, it's left hanging at the end battered and broken, culminating in one of the most unforgettable final scenes in Hollywood history.
It's hardly a surprise Chinatown's influence continues to reverberate to this day.
