Review of Chinatown (1974) by Tor M — 13 Nov 2015
Jack Nicholson as the nosy, cheeky, direct and smooth private investigator J.J. Gittes. A man with a solid repertoire of quotes. He takes a normal case - some broad fearing her husbands relations with a younger woman. Things is of course much bigger. Lies, tricks, corruption and murder. Many big people of LA is involved and so is Gittes. He loves it.
It looks very good. It's told in a superb way - twist happen often enough to keep it interesting, but not often enough to make you loose track of it. Classic music, classic cars, classic "fake sound of traffic outside buildings" that we get in many scenes shot indoors.
This is a top noir flick. Great acting and a very solid story. The complex web is quite bloody and it's very much a direct film. The looks of it is superb. So fresh and clean. It's like a moving picture where every scene is oozing of something own. It's the look of "Chinatown".
Madness among the pretty stuff and the typical Polanski tragedy is lifting it, making it a deserved classic.
8.5 out of 10 nose patches.
