Review of Chinatown (1974) by Jacob F — 23 Jul 2016
This is one of, if not, the best of 1974 in my opinion. It is a grandly mysterious film-noir with an expertly written screenplay and is tautly directed by Roman Polanski. The narrative is extremely involving as we watch Detective J.
J. "Jake" Gittes solve an elaborate conspiracy which leads to a shocking and unforgettable final twist. It is yet another one of those movies where I can't say a whole lot without giving much away.
Jack Nicholson brilliantly portrays Gittes, who I think is one of the greatest film detectives of all time. Faye Dunaway delivers one of her finest performances of all time as Evelyn Mulwray because she fully emotes and connects with her enigmatic and sympathetic character.
Overall, I consider Chinatown to be a cinema classic full of twists and turns. If you enjoy film-noirs, I believe it is a definite must-see.
