Review of Chinatown (1974) by Ernest D — 22 May 2012
With Chinatown, Polanski manages the difficult challenge of making a true neo-noir film, smartly using the codes of hardboiled detective fiction and adding his purely unwholesome touch to the oppressive and oniric ambiance of classic noir.
Beside the performance of Jack Nicholson at his best, Chinatown is an amazing film because it reunites a small scale film noir plot with the real problem of water supplying in the Los Angeles of the great depression.
