Review of Child's Play (2019) by Andil77 — 21 Jun 2019
Originally, I wasn't going to see this. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of current horror films and the few remakes I've seen aren't great. However, I heard Mark Hamill was going to voice Chucky and I figured I'd give it a go. I'm glad I did. There are a few callbacks to the original script, but most of the story is different and it has to be. Chucky's not a serial killer trapped in a toy, but a malfunctioning AI. This Chucky's motivations for killing, and yes he has a motivation, is different then the original.
It also makes sense to change the voice actor. Brad Dourif is the perfect voice for the original Chucky, but would not make sense for this one. Mark Hamill's voice has this sinister innocence about it that is perfect for the role. And this isn't like some gritty retelling, it's camp. There's a lot of dark humor. It knows what it's supposed to be and has fun with it. Also, I know people had an issue with Chucky's face, but after seeing the movie, I can say it does work in the movie's favor. So, if you're a fan of '80s horror and are willing to take a chance on a reimagining, I strong recommend this movie.
