Review of Child's Play (1993) by Rashaad T — 08 Apr 2013
This movie has a special place in my heart. Not only did I see this when I was very young around 9 or 10(which disturbed me a little and gave quite the nightmares) I have fond moments of seeing this on Halloween night and just screaming and laughing with family and friends after trick R treating. Seeing it again much older, it's not the best made movie, or even that thought provoking. But I don't quite understand the hate around this film. It's not trying to be anything more than a good slasher flick and it's not trying to reinvent the horror movie. It's a horror movie about a serial killer murdering people on his quest to transform back to human from a children's toy. Sounds ridiculous on paper, but on screen, I at least think, it's executed very well with a heavy dose of suspense and creepy atmosphere. In this film you don't see Chucky that much, which is why I think it's so effective. His little body is more ominous and threatening than Jason Vorhees' 7 foot bodybuilder figure looming in the shadows. Also this movie is made for kids and teens, those who are familiar with having toys and relationships with them. It's their nightmare for it to come alive but as a serial killer.
Great creepy sequences, especially the one of the mother who tries to burn Chucky. That moment of waiting anticipation before Chucky comes alive and STRIKES is seriously the scariest moment in the movie! Also seeing Chucky's small head and red bouncing hair going up a flight of stairs is more bone tingling than all the knife-blood moments in the film. Tom Holland and his crew knew what they were doing.
