Review of Children of Men (2006) by Netanya S — 15 Feb 2013
I did not like this film at all. It is very well directed, however the wooden characters and murky plot details make this film a drab mess. I never believed the world that Alfonso Cuaron tried to create because while it is dressed in a depressingly dark style, the characters do not operate as if the human race's horrible condition is of any relevance.
For example there are no fertile women left in the world, but when one woman is revealed to be pregnant, the militant revolutionary group called the Fishes decides that they want the woman's baby to use as a political tool for their coming revolution.
How exactly the baby would be any good against the police state, I do not know. But what really left me scratching my head was that Clive Owen's character tells the pregnant woman that she will be killed for her baby.
I understand that the only way the Fishes could take the baby away would be to kill the mother, but here's where that looses me: The human race is on the brink of extinction due to infertility and the Fishes actually want to kill the first pregnant woman in years? That really understates how horrible the human condition is when the characters in the film don't even realize it.
Also, the film's political correctness is just appalling.
