I am not a fan of William Hurt - never liked him much. BUT, I appreciated his performance in this film. The best scenes were those between he and Matlin. A bit preachy in places and very, very dated in all it's 80s glory, but on a whole was well paced.
The mix of humor with the students and drama with everything else was balanced nicely.
