Review of Children of a Lesser God (1986) by Todd I — 08 Aug 2012
While inaptly titled, "Children of a Lesser God" is a very clever, very moving romantic drama that uses its stellar leads to fascinating depths. Matlin definitely deserved her Oscar with her heartrending presence as a deaf woman who can only use her hands to convey emotion.
Hurt and Matlin are so natural in their sign language that we are pulled in, even with Hurt echoing everything Matlin says. This is a real gem that I'm surprised I hadn't seen earlier. Definitely worth a watch.
