Review of Child 44 (2015) by Sam W — 19 Apr 2015
Saw this last night mainly due to Ridley Scot's name attached to it.
This movie takes place in what appears to be a post war Soviet Union. Where people often get dragged off and killed for being traitors.
Noomi's character is one of those suspects and when Tom hardys character is ordered to denounce her he refuses which results in them being exiled. You then see them living a life of squalor far removed from the life of luxury they knew.
A common thread is one of young boys going missing and being found dead seemingly drowned. Tom hardys character is hell bent on finding the person responsible at great cost to his own life.
The movie was largely disappointing for me. They could have done away with the first 45 minutes of the movie. Throughout the movie it was tough to figure out what they were trying to say, it felt really disjointed. Was it a love story or a story about a hunt for a killer? It was hard to say and left me feeling really unfulfilled at the end.
Tom hardy does a passable Russian accent whereas noomi doesn't even try.
A decent enough movie that had the potential to be wonderful. A rare misstep on Ridley Scot's cv in my opinion.
