Review of Chico & Rita (2010) by Andrew B — 14 Feb 2012
This movie works on so many levels. First, the historical backdrop is drawn during a culturally rich point in contemporary history, particularly in the development and growing appreciation of the public for latin music and bebop/ hard bop styles of jazz.
The music is wonderful, a necessity given that it is central to the overall story. The ways that the characters are developed gives life to their passion, both on stage and with one another, despite the fact that they are animated.
The story is a classic story of missed opportunity, misunderstanding and misgivings about the decisions that have been made and continue to haunt the characters. I found this movie to be beautifully animated and surprisingly poignant.
I have a high regard for this film, and recommend it.
