Review of Che: Part One (2008) by Michael A — 03 Apr 2009
Review of the 'roadshow edition'(part 1 & 2). Epicly good. Yes, it's about 4 & half hours long but at least there's an intermission. Yes, it costs a little more than a regular movie but that's cuz part 1 is 2hrs 8mins & part 2 is 2hrs 9mins, so you're literally paying for 2 movies. Yes, it's all in spanish with english subtitles but you can read, remember?
I went in relatively fresh, didn't know much about Ernesto 'Che' Guevera & still haven't seen The Motorcycle Diaries (I know, I know; stop berating me already) but I love Benny Del Toro & Soderbergh is one of my fave directors; wasn't dissapointed. Not a cradle to the grave biopic & not a war movie, but a focus on Che's success (part 1) & failure (part 2) in the field as a revolutionary during his time in Cuba & Bolivia. Yeah it lags here & there but I loved it's deliberate pace, natural beauty, & documentary like style.
On a technical note: Soderbergh used a new digital camera called The Red 1 or something & I couldn't even tell it was digital, used to be able tell right away. On a filmgoer note: there's no beginning or end credits, & no ads or trailers when I saw the roadshow edition, just movie folks. So don't show up 10 - 15 minutes after showtime thinking you'll only miss trailers.
