Review of Che: Part One (2008) by Evan K — 27 Nov 2009
Steven Soderbergh avoids the trappings of the biopic and utilizes a variety of observational filmmaking techniques to great effect in "Che: Part One." The unconventional approach results in a realistic film comprised of rich details, in which small moments define the Cuban Revolution and the life of Che Guevara.
The lack of contrived drama is refreshing, and allows Benicio Del Toro to simply inhabit his role. Soderbergh compensates for the low-key plotting with tight editing and beautiful photography, which creates a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and gritty black-and-white imagery.
