Review of Chattahoochee (1990) by Vince K — 03 Aug 2009
A very young-looking Gary Oldman stars in this early '90s drama about a Korean War Veteran, in the '50s, who goes batshit insane one day, takes his gun, and starts shooting up his neighborhood, then tries to kill himself.
He gets sentenced to the Chattahooche mental hospital for the criminally insane, so I was looking forward to a crazy movie about a bucnh of insane people locked up together and all the shenanigans they get into.
Instead, it becomes a self-righteous civil rights movie about Oldman's fight against "the man" for the brutal mistreatment of inmates. Guards beat them to death, etc. etc. etc. He writes letters to everyone etc.
etc. etc. He grows an insane Osama Bin Laden beard, shoves things up his ass. You get the gist of it. An also very young-looking Frances McDormand plays his wife and Dennis Hopper plays his best friend in the asylum, and some slightly homoerotic things happen between them.
I've wanted to see this movie since I was a kid (it came out in 1990) because the title sounded so awesome, but it was probably too mature for me at the time. Based on a true story.
