Review of Charlie Countryman (2013) by Nikolai H — 17 Mar 2018
This was a weird one. Dark and seedy and magical realist and heartfelt and deeply comic all at once, ungainly like a Doberman puppy stumbling over its enormous feet. It felt like it needed to be longer, with a bit more meat on its bones, but I'm not sure the plot would sustain itself well if it was.
But I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it. I was chuckling or snorting for half the run time. Charlie was adorably bumbling, and Nigel was crude and villainous yet strangely endearing (which may entirely be my fondness for Mads Mikkelsen speaking, but hey).
Gabi veered a bit too close to damsel-in-distress at times, but she was smart and capable. Overall not bad.
