Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Eric G — 10 Sep 2010
An intimist film that could have been written by Umberto Eco: it's all about art and relationships, the idea of original and copy, reality and perception. The dialogue is dense and complex and the two themes interconnect, requiring strong attention. It is intellectually very stimulating and the actors are great but, while Binoche is full of emotions, I didn't feel that the film itself fully convey all the emotions it could have.
During the entire film, I was wondering if they had really never met and were acting as a married couple or if they were indeed married and acting as if they just met. This is were the themes join. What is the real relationship and what is the copy? What is an original piece of art? Is there such a thing as an original? Can a copy be an original? Can you change/rewrite the past by re-enacting it and changing it?
They struggle to understand each other, but I'm not convinced they really try.
Jean-Claude Carriere, the writer, appears in a little role.
