Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Lina A — 16 Sep 2012
Trying to explain "Certified Copy" in a few sentences is quite impossible. What seems like a simple story of a writer meeting a woman who is a fan during a book event in Tuscany, becomes an existential movie? Or is it about a couple reinvigorating the fire? Possibly a movie about what truths and lies actually mean.
Abbas Kiarostami's first non-Iranian film is filled with his gorgeously framed shots and long takes showcasing the actors. Opera singer William Shimell's performance as James was staggering. It was hard to believe he was not an actor.
Binoche is incredible as well. What can I say? You'll be left asking so many questions during and after the film, not just about what's happening in the movie, but about yourself as well.
