Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Matt G — 05 Mar 2012
I think this movie works better for me in theory, as an idea, than as a cinematic experience. Juliette Binoche and William Shimell do what they're allowed to do as well as they can, but the roles they play demand them to be ambiguous and vague.
So, essentially this movie is an intellectual conversation the director is having with the audience. But I felt isolated and unable to engage myself with this material. I don't see what I like about cinema here - the rhythm of montage, the musicality of the artform.
I just see art for art's sake, and that kind of story doesn't move me in any way. Perhaps I'm not Kiarostami's intended audience, and he doesn't make movies for the same reasons I watch them - which is natural.
But in the end, I just didn't care about this.
