Review of Centurion (2010) by Alex R — 15 Jun 2011
So, who likes blood and gore? If you do then chances are you will love this movie. Its one of the most violent films of recent years. Limbs hacked off, characters disemboweled, blood everywhere. The film does initially feel unfocused though with both Fassbender's lead and Dominic West (of The Wire) competing for screen time.
And its West who delivers the better scenes with his booming Shakespearian approach to the subject matter. Fassbender is more introverted and it ends up giving the film a nice balance. Support is a little thin on the ground.
Olga Kurylenko is actually quite good as a mute Pict tracker but beyond that its hard to find a meaty supporting role. Neil Marshall continues his streak of making decent movies without repeating the huge success of the Descent.
He's still a director I can trust, regardless of genre.
