Review of Cemetery Junction (2010) by Geoff T — 22 Aug 2010
Cemetery Junction is a movie that is very conventional, but makes up for its lack of originality by exhibiting irresistible charm, honesty, and maturity(for the most part). It's your typical coming of age story about hard truths and figuring out who you are.
The only problem with this movie is the unavoidable denouement where the main characters decide that the only way they can find themselves is it run away from everything they've ever known. I'm not sure why this has become such a stable of these kinds of films.
In the world of cinema, this is always portrayed as a mature and courageous endeavor, and I think in reality it's often a first resort instead of a last one, and one that is far more weak than brave.
If you dislike your life, it's very easy to change your environment and very difficult to change yourself. Guess which one most movies choose. I wish this endeavor was realistically or at least contrarily portrayed in more films.
There is a reason Kundera named his book the UNBEARABLE Lightness of Being, afterall.
