Review of Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974) by Carla S — 13 Oct 2008
Simply magical, and that's a word I almost never use. For the first hour (yes, you read that correctly), I wasn't really sure where this movie was going. But as it progressed, I became thoroughly absorbed in Celine and Julie's bizarre relationship and the continuous story-within-the-story.
It's a long film, but every minute is absolutely necessary and joyful, by turns eerie, funny, subversive, and adventurous. I have never seen anything quite like "Celine and Julie Go Boating," and it is certainly one of the most rewarding films I have ever seen.
