Review of Catch-22 (1970) by Andrew B — 17 Apr 2008
Catch-22 is a difficult movie to recommend for two specific reasons. One, for those who haven't read the source material, it can be somewhat difficult ot follow with its non-linear progression and bewildering story (I say bewildering not in a negative sense, but rather as a refence to its nonsensical nature).
Two, for those who have read the novel upon which this movie is based, there's little that this movie brings to the experience of the story. There's just no reason to see it at all. What I do give the film credit for is its comedic moments and faithful representation of the story elements of the novel.
The best way to enjoy this movie is to not have read the book and watch it a few times to understand what's going on. Why do that, however, rather than just read the book? This is a good film, don't get me wrong.
It just doesn't serve any real purpose.
