Review of Cat People (1982) by Laimis Z — 22 Sep 2009
Ffrom Paul Schrader, writer of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and director of Blue Collar and American Gigolo, comes a remake of Jacques Tourneur's 1942 horror film. Now 40 years later, they could make it alot more erotically charged and have more violence in the film.
It is good, and it is a very creepy film, quite unsettling too, but it's well made in a time of gory horror films coming out. Set in New Orleans, it has Irena Gallier (Nastassja Kinski), who is reunited with her estranged brother Paul (Malcolm McDowell).
She gets a job in a nearby zoo, and falls for zookeeper Oliver Yates (John Heard). They've recently captured a leopard that was found in a hotel room, how it got there, they don't know, but Irena feels close to the leopard, and she soon finds out why, and the truth behind her family's past.
Turns out she and Paul have the ability to turn into leopards, as they're the last in a long line of Cat People... It's an intriguing enough horror film, well made and the creature effects for it's day are well done.
The film even goes as far as recreating a number of scenes from the 1942 original. Oh, and it has a good theme song by David Bowie in it... :P.
