Review of Cat People (1942) by Neil O — 04 Jun 2011
A man (Kent Smith) meets an a female artist (Simone Simon) at the zoo, drawing and throwing out pictures of a panther (or what really looks like a jaguar to me) in a cage. They find each other intriguing and the begin to fall in love.
Eventually, they get married but the actions of the woman then become bizarre and erratic, and it seems she starts want to become a cat. I think have explained the plot clearly here. The first 30 minutes are kind of deranged and somewhat slow and even little cliched.
However, the film effortless becomes suspenseful and unusual, of which the artist starts to develop cat like characteristics and starts to go mad. It is an interesting movie, and despite the first 30 minutes, it is worth a viewing.
An interesting note, the psychiatrist in the film sounds very much like actor George Sanders. It is not him, but his brother, Tom Conway.
