Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Lukas Z — 11 Oct 2012
Big Daddy (Burl Ives) is a wealthy plantation owner with a terminal illness. His son Brick (Paul Newman) is an alcoholic washout in a loveless marriage with Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor), whom he blames for the suicide of his best friend.
They and the rest of the tempestuous family congregate for Big Daddy's 65th birthday; an event laced with sobering revelations and high drama. Despite glossing over the sexual overtones of the source material, this intense and impacting film is often considered the definitive celluloid transcription of Tennessee Williams' acclaimed play.
And, after sampling the layered and meaningful performances from its exceptional cast, one has a hard time disagreeing.
