Review of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) by Connor G — 13 Apr 2013
Given the year of release, this is as good a version of Williams' play as one could get. It's certainly the lead performances that shine. Taylor was born to play Maggie the Cat - the moment when she straightens hers stockings, just encapsulates the part; Newman is perfect as the drunk who can't or won't save himself and Burl Ives, gets the humanity of Big Daddy as well as the larger-than-life bluster.
Not a perfect adaptation but a very fine movie - despite the censoring.
