Review of Casualties of War (1989) by Rob T — 08 Jan 2008
Vietnam 1966: PFC. Erikkson (Michael J. Fox) is newley arrived to the war but already he owes his life to Sgt. Meserve (Sean Penn). His situation becomes complecated when on patrol the increasingly sociopathic Meserve leads the squad in kidnapping a young girl from a nearby village.
Meserve and the squad plan to rape then murder the girl before there patrol ends but Erikkson dissents...and finds his survival instinct coming into conflict with his moral judgment. Alone in the jungle Erikkson is on a collasion course with an event that will forever scar his soul.
Intense war drama about morality and how the world can conspire to make us act contrary to what we know is right. Fox does a good job as the scared and confused Erikkson well Penn is intimidating as Meserve (even if he does overact a bit).
Don Harvey has a good role as a near pyschotic soldier and look Ving Rhames, John C. Reilly and John Leguizamo in supporting roles. Inspired by a true story.
