Review of Casualties of War (1989) by Mark M — 10 Jun 2007
I usually get rather odd looks when I argue that this is my favourite Vietnam film. Not for the most logical reason either - ie, how could you have a FAVOURITE Vietnam film, are you some kind of war-loving-deviant.
This is not an anti-war film, but almost an anti-vietnam-war-film, making its closet comparison Godard's Les Carabiniers. It's also De Palma's most "important" work. Only recently with The Black Dahlia has he almost reached this level of "seriousness".
This will soon be surpassed by 'Redacted' later on in the year (hopefully) - which is based on an event in Iraq very similar to the horrendous one in this.
