Review of Casshern (2004) by Richard S — 22 Oct 2007
The recent US DVD release will only further the myth that foreign (and more specifically, modern Japanese films) are all insanely incomprensible. I'm willing to give the creators the benefit of the doubt. The R1 disc is a good 20 minutes short of the original cut. While that is no guarantee that the full version is stronger, there's a chance that a few of the many baffling moments would be clarified.
Even so, as others have noted, this borders on pastiche,so it would probably never be elevated too much higher, but it's visually interesting, so I really want to think positively. I'd love to know who made some of the incredibly awkward cutting decisions. There's wild editing to build energy and then there's illogical editing that no amount of thought can make sense of.
Give me the full version and maybe I'll give it another go.
