Review of Case 39 (2009) by David L — 27 Apr 2014
Never heard of this before which surprised me considering it had some pretty well known stars in it with Renee and Bradley. Had it have casted Ian 'Lovejoy' McShane as the leading role then I may have understood why this wouldn't have made cinematic release.
I kind of new it was going to be a mediocre psychological thriller but it was reasonably entertaining in parts. It was fairly predictable in the sense that the sweet innocent child was never going to be as dear as she seemed and despite the indication that it was her who was the victim of parental abuse, it was just a case of how soon into the tale will our social workers realise that there is something very demonic possessing her.
It was like a female version of Damian The Omen except just nowhere near as good and the deaths we witnessed were not all that imaginative for 21st century cinema. If anything, it was more irritating than evil, and it lost its way a little towards the end, culminating in quite a weak conclusion with the alternative ending described on Wikipedia sounding a little more inspiring.
It's good enough to kill a couple of hours, but nothing to have nightmares about, and certainly nothing to warrant a 'Case 40' sequel.
